What is buccal massage? Everything you want to know (and what it isn't)

Written by Yasmin · 3 min read

Buccal massage is a facial massage in which the muscles of the jaw and cheeks are worked on both from the outside and from inside the mouth, using gloves. The aim is to release tension in the jaw and face and to support circulation and lymphatic flow. It is not an injectable, not a procedure and not a dental treatment.

You may have seen it on your feed. A gloved hand inside someone's mouth, and a face that looks different afterwards. So what is actually going on?

What exactly is buccal massage?

"Buccal" comes from the Latin bucca, meaning cheek. In a buccal massage I work on the muscles around your jaw and cheeks. Some of them are easy to reach from the outside. Others sit deeper, and the inside of the cheek is simply the better way in.

Think of the masseter, the powerful chewing muscle you feel when you clench your teeth. Or the buccinator, the muscle in your cheek you use to chew and blow. Holding them between my fingers from both sides lets me feel very precisely where tension sits. And then gently give it space.

I also work on the connective tissue, the fascia, and use lymphatic techniques to support fluid drainage. So it doesn't just feel relaxing. Many people notice it in their face as well.

Why do people choose buccal massage?

A lot of us hold far more tension in our face than we realise. You only notice once you pay attention. Teeth together while you work. A tight forehead. A jaw that feels tired by the end of the day.

People come to me for different reasons:

  • They want to release tension in their jaw and face.
  • They clench or grind and are looking for a way to relax, alongside their dentist.
  • They want a fresher, more defined look without injectables.
  • They simply want a moment of real rest.

Afterwards, many people describe their face as lighter and their jaw as having more room. How it feels for you will be your own experience.

What buccal massage is not

This is the part I think matters most to be honest about.

  • Not Botox or filler. Nothing is injected or added. I only work with my hands.
  • Not a facelift. Results are natural and temporary. Your face stays your face.
  • Not a medical treatment. If you have pain or symptoms that don't go away, please have them checked by your dentist, physiotherapist or GP.

Buccal massage doesn't add anything. It lets something go: the tension you may have been carrying for a long time.

Does buccal massage hurt?

The part inside the mouth can feel intense, especially where there is a lot of tension. Some spots are tender. But it should never go past your limit. I don't push through resistance. I slow down, feel, and follow what your body tells me. You set the pace, and you can always say when something is too much.

Many people are surprised by how relaxing it ends up feeling.
