Fluid or fat? Why your face can look so different after lymphatic drainage

Written by Yasmin · 3 min read

A puffy or fuller-looking face is often caused by fluid build-up rather than fat. Facial lymphatic drainage is a gentle massage technique that supports the natural drainage of that fluid through the lymphatic system. That's why your jawline, cheeks and under-eye area can look more defined after a treatment, although the effect is temporary.

The shape of your face isn't always about fat... often, it's fluid.

Why does my face sometimes look puffy?

Your lymphatic system is a kind of drainage network. It carries away fluid, waste and proteins that are left between your cells. Unlike your blood, it has no heart to pump it. It mostly moves along with your breathing, your muscles and your movement.

When that system slows down or gets overloaded, fluid can collect. Your natural facial structure becomes less visible, especially around the jawline, the cheeks and under the eyes.

There are lots of possible reasons. A short or poor night's sleep. A salty meal. Not drinking enough. A busy period where your body is running in survival mode. Or simply mornings, after hours of lying down. Almost everyone knows that just-woke-up face.

What does lymphatic drainage do for the face?

With lymphatic drainage I work very lightly, which often surprises people. The lymph vessels lie just under the skin, so firm pressure isn't needed. Using soft, rhythmic strokes I follow the route fluid takes towards the lymph nodes in your neck.

That's why I often don't start with your face at all, but with your neck and collarbones. First create space there, so the fluid has somewhere to go. Then the face.

Good lymphatic work isn't about making your face "slimmer". It's about supporting drainage and helping to ease built-up stagnation. That's an important difference.

Why can the difference be so visible?

This is also why results can sometimes show so quickly... we're working with fluid, not fat.

Massage doesn't remove fat. Fluid, however, can start to move. After a treatment many people see a sharper jawline, less puffiness under the eyes and a fresher face. Sometimes the difference in a before-and-after photo is striking.

It's worth being realistic, though. The effect is temporary. Your body keeps holding and draining fluid every single day. How long you see the difference depends on your sleep, diet, stress levels and how often you have a treatment.

What can you do yourself?

  • Drink enough water, including after a treatment.
  • Move. Even a walk gets your lymphatic system going.
  • Breathe slowly and deeply into your belly. Your breath works like a gentle pump.
  • In the morning, stroke lightly from the centre of your face outwards, then down along your neck.

If you notice sudden or one-sided swelling, or swelling that doesn't go away, contact your GP. Lymphatic drainage is meant for relaxation and radiance, not for treating medical causes.

Lymphatic drainage is part of every treatment in The Beyond Method. In Presence I work fully from the outside, while Reveal and Beyond combine it with buccal massage. Want to experience what happens when your face can breathe again? Boek je behandeling.

Your face doesn't need more. It needs space. 🫧
